Kindergarten: Music and Movement

Music activities will focus on basic concepts of pitch and rhythm, the expressive qualities of sound, using large and small motor movements, and coordinate listening to music with the use of small percussion instruments.

1st Grade: Musical FUN-damentals

Music activities will explore music in contrast – high and low, fast and slow, short and long, loud and soft. The children will use this knowledge to create a toolbox of musical skills to choose from when performing a variety of songs and instrumental pieces.

2nd Grade: Reading Music

Music activities will explore musical notation. Children's experiences in previous grades with songs and musical activities will provide the foundation for learning to read standard rhythmic notation. Children will be asked to compose short pieces and notate them using both standard and invented musical notation.

3rd Grade: Reading, Writing and Recorders

Music activities will continue to explore musical notation, expanding to the use of standard musical notation of pitch on a staff. These activities will include beginning recorder instruction and the use of recorders to accompany songs and musical activities in class. Connections will be made to instruments in the woodwind family.

4th Grade: Music and Science

Music activities will explore the connections between science and music. Why are instruments classified into families? How are instruments designed and built? Children will continue to hone their listening, performing, and evaluating skills throughout the year.

5th Grade: Music throughout Time

Music activities will explore the relationship of history and culture with the development of American music. Rhythm, pitch, texture, dynamics, tempo, form, and style will be explored, all while developing the ability to describe how and why individuals 'like' certain kinds of music.
